Wilmer Wise: Jazz at Lincoln Center: 'Swinging Tribute to Joe Wilder' Wednesday, February 19, 2014 7:30 pm at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola

Joe Wilder

Trumpeter Wilmer Wise sends this link:

With Bucky Pizzarelli, guitar/music director; Rufus Reid, bass; Russ Kassoff and Bill Charlap (7:30pm only), piano; Ed Laub, guitar; Warren Vache, Jimmy Owens, Brandon Lee, trumpet; and Loren Schoenberg, tenor saxophone

We are proud to host a tribute to trumpeter and living legend Joe Wilder on the week of his 92nd birthday. Over the course of his career, Wilder regularly worked with a virtually incomparable list of jazz icons, including Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Benny Carter, Tony Bennett, Yusef Lateef, Gil Evans, and Hank Jones. One of the first thousand black Marines to serve during World War II, Wilder eventually became Assistant Bandmaster for the headquarters’ band. He enjoyed decades of first-call status as a studio musician and live jazz performer. For his impact on the history of American music–and especially for furthering jazz’s influence on the development of the music industry–his legacy as a national treasure is more than deserved. Join Wilder at Dizzy’s as some of his favorite musicians pay him tribute.
