Eric Conway: 'Morgan Touch Exhibition Now showing'

Dr. Eric Conway of Morgan State University in Baltimore wrote on October 12, 2012:

Hello Fine and Performing Arts Community,

Last night, the department hosted an opening reception of the exhibition: The Morgan Touch: Reflecting on Influence, Identity and Purpose. The attendance for the event was good, however, the exhibition was extraordinary.  This exhibition of the works of 33 MSU alums as well as current and past faculty members could rival any of the professional galleries across the United States in terms of artistic and socialistic breath, scope, and depth of expression  If one of the purposes of art is to inspire, I believe everyone who attended last evening's exhibit was in fac t- inspired!

Immediately following the opening reception, a symposium was held in the recital hall at Murphy, moderated by Dr. Erness Hill.  The symposium featured three panelists Oliver Patrick Scott, Keith Smith, and Jamal Thorne - all artists who participated in the exhibition.  The purpose of the symposium was to reflect on the Morgan Touch over the past 10 years while in the new Murphy Fine Arts Building.  Discussions included reflections on:  1) the impact that the Morgan Visual Arts Faculty has had students, 2) how our graduates have made an impact in the professional world,  and 3) the direction of the Visual Arts department going forward.  The thoughts of the panelist were stimulating and provocative.  At the end of the day, it was clear that Morgan State University is fortunate, no blessed, to have such a strong faculty that cares so very much for its students.

I would like to publicly thank Blaise DePaolo who was the chief faculty member to coordinate this successful event.  Additionally, thanks go out to Eric Briscoe who almost single-handedly hung the Art work of the entire exhibition in the Gallery.

If you get a chance, please visit the Exhibition in the James E. Lewis Gallery in the Murphy Fine Arts Center.

Best,

Eric Conway, D.M.A.
