PUSH – featuring SHIFT
music by Shirley J Thompson

The Hippodrome, Birmingham - Friday 11 May and Saturday 12 May 2012 at 19:30hrs
PUSH is produced by Sadler's Wells in collaboration with Russell Maliphant and Sylvie Guillem

After three sell-out seasons at Sadler's Wells, five star reviews, a European tour and sold-out performances in New York, PUSH comes to Birmingham Hippodrome for the first time where the legendary Sylvie Guillem is joined onstage by Russell Maliphant.

This mixed programme features SHIFT, Maliphant’s signature solo set to Shirley Thompson’s "haunting beautiful music" and SOLO, performed by Guillem to the music of Carlos Montoya. The evening is completed by the powerful driving solo, TWO, performed by Guillem and PUSH – a duet combining the abilities of this extraordinary partnership set to an original score by Andy Cowton. The four pieces are complemented by lighting designed by Maliphant’s long-time collaborator Michael Hulls, reflecting the flow and energy between movement and light.

France’s Le Figaro magazine described Shirley Thompson’s music for Shift as “superb”.
The Guardian newspaper commented on Shirley Thompson’s  “adventurous mind”.
Sylvie Guillem is widely regarded as the most "brilliant ballerina of her generation" (The Guardian). "A choreographer of persistent accomplishment and a performer of enduring fascination. Mesmerising" (The Times on Russell Maliphant)

Since its debut in 2005, PUSH has received four major awards: an Olivier Award, a Time Out Award, Best Choreography (Modern) at the National Dance Awards and the South Bank Show Dance Award.

Thompson’s pioneering vision offers the music scene a fresh convergence of styles and has led her to gaining an exemplar reputation for a shaping a creative and distinctive voice. By fearlessly removing perceptions and boundaries across musical genres, she exquisitely integrates orchestrations with popular and world music styles to create a distinct contemporary classical music expressionism that has not been seen before.

Shift was originally commissioned by Dance 4, Nottingham and DanceXchange, Birmingham.

went to the hippodrome last night and were all three of us enthralled by the music, the fluidity and beauty of the dance and the amazing choreography.
In fact this applied to all four pieces.
Thanks for a truly great experience.
