Surrey Opera: 'Thelma by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor – World Premiere' February 8, 2012

[Samuel Coleridge-Taylor]

Surrey Opera announces the World Premiere performance of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's opera Thelma, in the composer's birthplace of Croydon, on February 8, 10 and 11, 2012:

“Surrey Opera will present the World Première of 'Thelma' by Samuel Coleridge Taylor in February 2012 at the Ashcroft Theatre in Croydon.
The year 2012 marks the centenary of the death of Samuel Coleridge Taylor, a resident of Croydon. His music was extremely popular in his day and his 'Hiawatha's Wedding Feast' cantata is performed regularly now. We are proud to be bringing to life his only opera, which was believed to be 'lost' until Catherine Carr, a PhD student, discovered the manuscript in the British Library while researching a thesis about his life (published in 2005).”

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) was an Afro-British composer and conductor featured at AfriClassical.com. The Centennial of his death will be in 2012. Major observances are being planned in the U.K. throughout that year by organizations including the Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Foundation, http://www.sctf.org.uk/.
