(September 19, 2011, New York, NY) – On Friday, September 30 at 7pm, the Morehouse College Glee Club will visit The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space, WNYC and WQXR’s innovative, street-level broadcast studio and performance space, to share a preview of its Centennial Anniversary Benefit Concert happening two nights later at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center.

Award-winning WQXR host TERRANCE MCKNIGHT, a Morehouse Glee Club Alumnus and a former music professor at Morehouse, will welcome DAVID MORROW, Director of the Morehouse College Glee Club, for a lively conversation that moves through and beyond the music to explore the choir’s rich history. Morrow will take the in-studio and online audiences on a deep dive into the social context of the Glee Club’s background: from its humble, yet significant beginnings during an era when African Americans were denied public educational resources and had to strengthen communities on their own, to the challenges and obstacles the group faced as an all-male, all-black choir in the South, to developing its present-day reputation for excellence in vocal, instrumental and conducting performance artistry.

Additionally, members of the MOREHOUSE COLLEGE GLEE CLUB will perform original repertoire, including “Who’ll Join?,” written for the choir’s 100th anniversary.

The entire evening will be available via live video webcast at http://www.thegreenespace.org, and taped to air on All Ears with Terrance McKnight – McKnight’s cross-genre program that explores connections between the European classical tradition and music of the African Diaspora – on Saturday, October 8 at 10pm on Classical 105.9 FM WQXR and http://www.wqxr.org
.
The October 2, 2011 Centennial Anniversary Benefit Concert at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center is hosted by The Maroon & White Fund (a 501 (c) 3 support organization of Morehouse College). The event will officially launch the Power of Ten Scholarship Initiative for current Morehouse students. Morehouse is America’s oldest all-male collegiate glee club under professional directorship, with alumni including Martin Luther King, Jr., former Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson, Congressman Sanford Bishop, former U.S. Secretary of Health Dr. Louis Sullivan, Presidential hopeful Herman Cain (R) and Nigerian drummer Michael Babatunde Olatunji, among others. The Morehouse College Glee Club has performed at numerous places, from The White House to famed venues across the country to acclaimed stages around the globe.
